Classroom Topics

Programs will be grade level appropriate so the same topic can be repeated for different grade levels, unless grade level is specified. I have made several changes to the presentations, including the removal of some of the lesser requested topics, as well as the addition of a few new topics.

The following schedule should be used when requesting days for classroom visits:

Schools located in the county - Mondays & Tuesdays

Schools located within the city - Wednesdays thru Fridays

 

 

  • Arbor Day – Trees – Can discuss trees without Arbor Day but can’t discuss Arbor Day without trees. Holiday celebrated the last Friday in April for Indiana.  Why and where did it start? How do we celebrate it?
  • Animal Sleep – It is important to humans, but is sleep important to other animals as well?
  • Animals in Winter – Do you know what a bear does in winter?  Is it hibernate or winter sleep? Who else hibernates?
  • Animals that Come From Eggs other than Birds – K-2 - Features the book “Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones” by Ruth Heller.
  • Bats – Amazing flying mammals
  • Bears – How many different species of bears are there in the world?  Emphasis on Polar, Grizzly or Brown, American Black, and Panda.
  • Birds- An over view of the parts of a bird, a close look at beaks and types of food they are specialized for, and who builds what type of nest.
  • Brain Size - Does brain size = smartness? A look at the smallest and largest brains in the animal kingdom. . .and the average.
  • Butterflies – 2nd Grade ONLY (During April) – sign up early – Every classroom visited will be left with three caterpillars to watch the life cycle.
  • Camouflage –Now you see me. . .Now you don't. Who uses camouflage and why?
  • Classification – Why and how are things classified? 
  • Eagles – Why is it our national symbol?
  • Earth Day – Who started it? What is it and how do we celebrate it?
  • Earthworms – Preferably 2nd grade – but can be done with all grades – Live earthworms will be brought to class for hands on-examination. Why are earthworms so important to the soil?
  • Fossils – What is a fossil?  How do we get fossils?  I will bring several examples of fossils for hands-on examination and leave a few with each classroom.
  • Frogs – vs. Toads - What are the major differences? A look at some of the more colorful frog species.
  • Habitats – What is a habitat? We will examine six different types of habitat and the variety of species that live in each, and how they are adapted.
  • Insects – How do I know it’s an insect?  What are the distinct parts of an insect?
  • Invertebrates - 6th - 8th Grade ONLY - No back bone - no problem! Emphasis on the annelids.
  • Lewis and Clark – Animal Discoveries - How important are acculturate descriptions?  
  • Mammals - Do you have what it takes to be classified a mammal?
  • Our Ohio River -Fun facts about the river, businesses on the river, and it's importance in the expansion of our country.
  • Owls – Are they really wise?
  • Rocks and Minerals – 3rd - 5th Grade ONLY - Why are they joined and what is the difference? Scratch test will be performed to determine the identity of a few rocks and minerals.
  • Rotten Truth – Just because you throw it away, doesn't mean it goes away! Where does your garbage go when it leaves your house?
  • Seasons – Kindergarten only – Take a tree through the seasons.
  • Snakes – NO REAL SNAKES!! Snakes of Indiana and venomous or non-venomous.
  • Soil – What is it and how does it get here?
  • Soil Profile – 4th grade only – Didn't know soil could taste so good!
  • Spiders –Who are you calling four eyes? Six legs or eight?
  • Trees – see Arbor Day
  • Turtles - Armored reptiles. Is it a tortoise or a terrapin?
  • Water – The most unique element on the planet, not to mention one of the most powerful forces in nature.
  • Web of Life – Students will create a web of life to understand that all things on earth are connected.
  • Wolves – How do wolves communicate? Who leads the pack?
